I realize you stated you were looking for a small to medium sized dog, if you are interested in Lab's you can check out http://www.shironfarms.net/ they run a local farm and breed chocolate labs once a year, we got our lab from them over a year ago and couldn't be happier, they are very reasonable in price as well.

We fell in love with Shetland Sheepdogs (Shelties). They are GREAT with kids. The downside is they are VERY active, bark and shed. They are however, the most loving and expressive dogs I've ever had.
Our first we got from Heart Lake Shelties in PA. She breeds dogs in her home, only a few times a year. She scrutinizes any prospective "parents" to ensure their motives are clear.

A year later we adopted a half brother of our first to complete the family.
Shelties are not for everyone. They need attention to grooming and lots of playtime. The sight if the older dog sleeping in bed with my oldest child (while being hugged by him alseep) still gets to me.

A friend of mine would like to find a good home for her one yr old black and white Shih-Tzu. He is about 1.5 ft long 13 lbs. A beautiful, playful dog, good for kids. He is not neutured yet.
My frined paid nearly $1,000 for it. She would be happy for any price (suggesteed $500) for a good home. She is too busy to take care of "Elvis" in addition to her 3 boys :-)
If interested, please e-mail to matt@managementscience.com as soon as possible.

I vote for shelties :D
Mine came from Haven House Shelties in Lake Hiawatha (North Jersey)
Excellent breeder, healthy well tempered pups.
Like the person above said, shelties are not for everyone. They are herding dogs and need a job, exercise and a lot of grooming to be happy. Not to mention the barking.
But no matter what breed you decide on I suggest you do your research on the breed first and choose a dog that matches your lifestyle.
Remember, a dog is a 10+ year commitment and pets are not disposable members of the family.
Good luck in your search
