View Full Version : American Grille
While this place is still getting established on the inside, the food here is awesome! They serve TRUE Italian hot dogs! For those of you who are from the greater Newark area, you know that a real Italian hot dog is one in the fresh pocket (pizza) bread, with peppers onions and potatoes. Their breakfasts are also very good! Yes--- they serve breakfast. Aside from the chains (Perkins) and diners, hard to find small "mom and pop" breakfast spots here. Everything is made to order and very fresh! Their coffee is the same roast as Dunkin Donuts and tastes great, too.
The owners live in the area and the two brothers (owners) are former chefs. I love that it's a great "go-to" place for something quick or you can sit down and eat, too.
I just wanted to share.... with the area growing as it is, it's important for us to show our patronage in order for these smaller places to sustain themselves and be given a chance. I think American Grille is worth a visit!

Wow, cmom, I had no idea! I grew up in Newark and Jimmy Buff's was the first place I ever ate a hotdog outside of my own mother's kitchen.
You're from Newark? What part? I lived in the Roseville section. Jimmy Buff's Newark location just closed last year. I guess the old neighborhood wouldn't support it any longer. But I've been to all the other locations (W.O., S.P., Irvington and East Hanover) several times.

So exactly where is this American Grill? You raved about it, then left out the location. You probably know that boiling a hot dog in old Newark was a mortal sin.
I'll take a double, extra mustard, extra ketchup and twenty four napkins.
Dave!
Wow! You've really sparked a memory (or two or three!)!!! I grew up in the Ironbound section, but remember Jimmy Buff's in every way!
You're right... all that hype and I didn't mention the spot... it's in the same strip mall (on 57 and Strykers) where Biagio's is and is the storefront that was the old Martha's. You need to give it a try. My dad, quite the Newark hot dog expert, was impressed!
Let me know what you think!
PS--- I can't believe you didn't say, "I'll take one with the WORKS!"

Yeah, the works... I always get the works, with extra ketchup on the potatoes and extra mustard on the roll, and extra napkins to wipe my elbows.
I was in the Ironbound recently. That's a nice neighborhood to come from. My dad used to work nearby there on Vanderpool Street at DuPont. I went to Iberia for Paella. YUMMM and enough leftovers from my dish alone to feed three hungry people. I stopped counting the shrimp at 10.
We'll go check out American Grill real soon.
BTW, have you ever been to Rutt's Hut in Clifton for a ripper? They hotdogs are deep fried until the rip themselves open. Most horrible disgusting delicious dog around. Right off Rt. 46.
Indeed I have! In fact, we'll be passing Rutt's today on my way to visit some family! I just may have to stop for some grease!
When you've gone to American Grille, do share!
If it taste like the original Dicky Dee's in Newark it is sure worth the visit.
Wow, Pak! Now, that's a hard one to beat, but I can tell you it's worth a taste!

A while back some folks from old Newark had a vote about which was better.
Jimmy Buffs or Dickie Dee's. I think the edge went to DD, but it would be a tough call.

I knew Jimmy Buff's very well when I was growing up in Irvington. I've not had a hot dog in years and years as I'm a really healthy eater now, but after reading this I may have to break down and try this place just to see if I remember what one of those hot dogs tasted like! The good ole days!
Thanx for sharing.

I used to go to the Irvington store once in a while when I worked over on Frelinghuysen Avenue. It was a nice neighborhood, once upon a time.
I am so glad that the American Grill is open now. I tried their Philly Cheese Steak the other day and it was great.
I too try to eat healthy, but this is my downfall.
Double dog with everything, please.
